Educate Our Lawmakers.. Oh Wait That Costs Money.

Today it is very hard to be a college student. I feel as if the future holds nothing but gloom. Our governor just passed a bill to increase college tuition in Washington. The community college I attend will increase tuition so students can continue to ride the bus for free. I feel as if the less money we have, the more prices rise. It is indeed frightening to be a college student in 2009!

I noticed these issues in our school newspaper, while I discussed them I started to get very riled up. So now I'm writing as a release. I feel like our country has come so far with public colleges, loans, financial aid, and scholarships to make college affordable! And now it's like we're taking a giant step backward. The main reason I am not attending University of Portland in the fall is because of money. It's a private school and I did get a scholarship but nothing can really pay for 32g a year! My credits from South Puget Sound also wouldn't transfer so to me I had to realize that unless I wanted to be in debt, this school wasn't an option anymore.

How sad is that? I have worked my butt off all four years of high school with a 3.8 GPA and have almost earned my AA through Running Start. And what do I have to show for it? I can't go to the college of my choice because my parents don't qualify for financial aid, and loans are pretty much impossible to come by now.

What is going to happen to our education system if going to college is pretty much impossible? Even community colleges are effected. My school decided it'd rather increase the tuition instead of paying for the bus. I don't even take the bus! I already pay for parking, now my tuition is going to be increased.

Welcome to the America where only the people who are supported by the government get by.

The education system in America needs an overhaul entirely, and I'd rather start with public education (K-12) before dealing with universities.

I can sympathize with not being able to attend the college of your choice because there isn't a college fund at home, and you're therefore too poor to pay out-of-pocket for tuition & too rich to qualify for some of the heftier financial aid options.

I wonder what ever happened to a good old-fashioned Associate's degree? Get a minor education bump at community college and then enter the workforce; sadly, many employers simply use the catch-all of a Bachelor's degree to screen applicants. Personally, I'd rather hire someone with an Associate's or a certificate in what I need than a university graduate who has a more robust academic experience that likely doesn't apply more than 20% towards what my business/department runs.

Good luck, kid!

I'm a bit confused by the last line: "Welcome to America where only the people who are supported by the government get by." Only poor, disabled, vets, and elderly are supported in this country. Do you want them to starve. They "get by" but that's it. They don't have money for vacations and dinner out besides fast food. You are right that we need lower cost tuition, more loans, etc. A lot of other industrialized countries have low cost or free tuition. So start fighting for that. Start fighting for health care. Some of those people who get "supported by government" may be poor because they got a chronic disease and wiped out their 401ks. And isn't that what you are asking for by wanting lower tuition, etc. is the "government" to support you?
